General information about Bulgaria

Geography of Bulgaria

Bulgaria is situated on Balkan Peninsula and is bordered by Romania, Greece, Turkey, Macedonia and Serbia, also has its own coastline on the Black sea. This small country has everything to make it an interesting tourist destination during the whole year. One summer will not be enough to enjoy the beaches that extended for more than 300 km.

Bulgarian Climate

The climate in Bulgaria is moderate continental with four yearly seasons and average annual temperature of 10.5 C. The coldest month is January with an average temperature of 0 degrees centigrade. The average air temperature in the summer is 30 C, and the average water temperature 25 C.

Bulgarian People

The Bulgarians are a South Slavic people native to Bulgaria and neighbouring regions. Most  live in Bulgaria, where they are around 6 million, constituting 85% of the population. There are significant Bulgarian minorities in the Republic of Macedonia, Serbia, Greece, Turkey, Albania, Romania (Banat Bulgarians), as well as in Ukraine and Moldova (Bessarabian Bulgarians). The ethnic composition as of 2001 is Bulgarian 83.9%, Turk 9.4%, Roma 4.7%, other 2% (including Macedonian, Armenian, Tatar, Circassian)

Economy

The economy of Bulgaria functions on the principles of the free market, having a large private sector and a small, but strong public sector. Bulgaria is an industrialised upper-middle-income country according to the World Bank with a gross national income per capita of US$ 5,490 in 2008. It has experienced rapid economic growth in recent years, even though its income level remains one of the lowest within the EU with an average monthly wage of 752 leva (384 euro). The strongest sectors are energy, mining, metallurgy, machine building, agriculture and tourism.
