General information about Macedonia

Geography of Macedonia

Situated in the southern region of the Balkan Peninsula, Macedonia is landlocked and mountainous. It is bordered by Kosovo to the northwest, Serbia to the north, Bulgaria to the east, Greece to the south and Albania to the west. The country's capital is Skopje, with 506,926 inhabitants according to a 2002 census.

Macedonian Climate

Macedonia has a transitional climate from Mediterranean to continental. The summers are hot and dry and the winters are moderately cold. Average annual precipitation varies from 1,700 mm (66.9 in) in the western mountainous area to 500 mm (19.7 in) in the eastern area. The majority of Macedonia has a moderate continental climate with warm and dry summers and relatively cold and wet winters.

People of Macedonia

The Macedonians  also referred to as Macedonian Slavs â€“ are a South Slavic people who are primarily associated with the Republic of Macedonia. They speak the Macedonian language, a South Slavic language. Macedonians constitute circa 64% of the population with Ethnic Albanians around 24%, Turks 4% , Roma 3%, Serbs 2% and others around 3%.

Macedonia Economy

Recently ranked by the World Bank as the fourth 'best reformatory state' out of 178 countries Macedonia has undergone considerable economic reform since independence. The country has developed an open economy with trade accounting for more than 90% of GDP in recent years. The current government introduced a flat tax system  of 10% with the intention of making the country more attractive to foreign investment. Despite these reforms, Macedonia's unemployment rate its very high.
